The 2026 Bio-based Innovation Student Challenge Europe is now open for registration!

Together with MTU and DAFM, BiOrbic are pleased to launch the 2026 Irish Competition. The winning team from Ireland will go forward to the European Competition in October 2026!

The Challenge:      

To develop an innovative bio-based product or process to help resolve technological, environmental, or societal challenges. The proposed solution will gain in the evaluation if it has been tested in a lab (or beyond lab) to provide an insight into its potential for integration in the current (or near future) bio-based industry and bioeconomy.   

Who can enter:       

Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students or a combination thereof. Teams composed solely of PhD students are not permitted. 

Team information:   

At least 3 students (max. 6) plus a supervisor (a PI, or Post-doctoral Researcher). Individuals can be from different institutions, and multidisciplinarity is encouraged. 

Timeline:                  

Registration by 31st Jan 2026. 

Online information session: 10th Feb 1pm. 

Irish competition: Feb – May 2026. 

European competition: October 2026. 

Benefits:                  

The Irish competition is structured to provide all participating teams with academic supports, training sessions / workshops as well as the opportunity to gain an optional Level 9 accreditation from Munster Technological University.  

Prizes:                      

Prize money is awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.  

1st Prize – 1000 euro

2nd Prize – 750 euro 

3rd Prize – 500 euro 

Winners will be announced at the All Island Bioeconomy Summit on May 19th 2026, and participants will receive VIP tickets to the event.
